The Pistachio Tree: Roots of Memory

“The Pistachio Tree: Roots of Memory” is a multidisciplinary project that weaves together literature, craftsmanship, and ecology into one powerful artistic gesture. Inspired by a short story by Magsud Ibrahimbayov, the monodrama The Pistachio Tree explores deeply human themes of memory, belonging, and continuity through the lens of Azerbaijani storytelling. At its heart stands the “Pistachio Carpet”, a handwoven triptych created by Azerkhalcha, which reimagines centuries-old weaving traditions in a contemporary context. Completing the project is the symbolic planting of a pistachio tree in Icherisheher, a living monument to renewal, sustainability, and the enduring roots of cultural memory in Azerbaijani soil. Together, these three elements form a poetic dialogue between past, present, and future, a reflection on resilience, creativity, and the ways in which heritage and nature continue to shape our shared identity.
