My Seas, My Oceans

In a time of climate change, rising temperatures, and fragile ecosystems, My Seas My Oceans invites reflection on one of our planet’s most vital resources: water. From the Caspian Sea to the world’s oceans, the health of our waters shapes the health of our collective future. This exhibition is initiated by IDEA (International Dialogue for Environmental Action) and the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, organizations leading environmental advocacy and sustainable development in Azerbaijan and beyond. Since its founding in 2011 by Leyla Aliyeva, IDEA has championed initiatives such as establishing the first marine protected area in the Caspian and developing the Hydro Heroes app, empowering citizens to take an active role in water conservation. Leyla Aliyeva, the project’s inspirer, emphasizes: “Protecting our seas and oceans is not a choice—it is a responsibility we owe to future generations.” The project’s first edition debuted in Geneva in 2022, setting the stage for a global dialogue on the protection of aquatic ecosystems. Curated by Emin Mammadov, this edition presents works by over forty contemporary artists addressing issues from pollution and overfishing to biodiversity loss, while celebrating water as a source of life, renewal, and imagination. The exhibition aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals: Clean Water and Sanitation, Responsible Consumption, Climate Action, and Life Below Water. My Seas My Oceans shows that art is not only a reflection of reality but a catalyst for change, reminding us that collective creativity and action can secure clean, living seas and oceans for generations to come.
